Giving and Receiving Joy

March 6, 2022

Hey everyone, as usual it's been a busy start to 2022.  It’s crazy that we are two months into the new year already.  I feel like it was just yesterday I was sitting in my house around the Christmas tree with my family.  Although time has flown by so much has happened in the past couple months. There’s been a lot of good, my best friend Rob proposed to his girlfriend, my brother moved into his first apartment and my parents began building their dream home.  It’s been incredible to be able to share these incredible moments with my favorite people.  There’s also been a lot of lows and failures, failures that hurt more than others.  The funny thing about life, you can have incredible things happen and all it takes is one bad thing and, in our minds, it washes away all the good and all the joy.  It is important to recognize and understand, we have a choice.  We can choose to let bad times take over and bring us down, or we can stand up and let joy and the power of positivity into our lives every single day.

To be completely honest I haven’t always chosen joy, I’ve fallen victim to those negative feelings. Those feelings of not being enough, failure, letting people down.  These negative feelings can completely ruin your life.  It can break you down, create a space in your mind that only sees negativity, hate, anger, despair, and loneliness. Within this space anxiety is born.  Anxiety then breeds its own difficulties, but there is relief.  The relief through all of this is we have choice. We have the power to control all of this with our decision to make the right choice.  We can choose to be sad, angry, scared or we can choose to be proud, happy, and strong.  We can make that choice through the people in our lives.  The people in our lives provide us with the tools we need to choose joy. They give us the strength to be better versions of ourselves every day. Whether it’s your friends, family, religious figures, or a complete stranger on the side of the road that gave you a smile or told you to “Have a nice day”, on one of the hardest days of your life.  That’s the beauty of joy, it doesn’t discriminate. It doesn’t care who you are, what skin color you have or where you are from.  Joy is a state of bliss that every person is capable of feeling.  I have been blessed with a network of people that have shown me joy every day of my life.  Even when I was so low, I felt like there was no way out.  I had people that brought me joy.  My friends, family, and my girlfriend haven’t given up on me; even when I gave up on myself.  Joy in your life comes from those who continue to believe in you, even when the road on your life’s journey seems hopeless.  All we have to do is look around, those people who bring joy and support are by your side.

The world is filled with so much hate.  Everywhere we turn we see hate, anger, violence.  We need to start spreading kindness. It is time we take care of one another, look after one another, and continually help those people who need to find their joy. Check on your friends and family.  Check on the people who are hurting but aren’t showing it.  Check on the friends who you haven’t talked to in a while.  Check on a family member you’ve lost touch with. Don’t wait until it’s too late to choose joy and bring joy into the lives of others.  Wherever life takes you, bring joy along for the ride.
